I frequently visit your site to see what's new. I'd be very exited to see
more maps on Verduria and the Plain. I am very interested in world building
and have a land and language under construction of my own (Kanaran). I would
like to see more tips on creating worlds, like what you should do first and
how detailed should it be. You know, like tips from a pro.
Mark responds:
Yes, that's a good idea... I intend to write a World Construction Kit
someday, too. In the meantime, you can ask questions here... as you did,
in fact; here are some rather unsatisfactory answers.
- What to do first: Whatever interests you-- maps, language(s), history,
stories. It depends on how your mind works; any of these can lead into
the others. Myself, I usually start with maps (and naming things on them
gives me a rudimentary vocabulary).
- How detailed: Whatever you have time and interest for! Tolkien had
more background material than stories, and that helps give his books
their realistic, sophisticated air. Other created worlds are quite
effective despite seemingly being improvised (I suspect Douglas Adams
is an example of this).
